Syrah
Ageworthy and expressive, Dehlinger Syrah has remained a favorite of the Dehlinger family and winemaking team for nearly three decades.
Vineyard & Site
Our three acres of Syrah were grafted in 1990 and thrive on a hillside site well-suited to the variety.
The region’s cooling fog preserves the variety’s spicy, complex character, while morning sun allows for full ripeness and depth of flavor. The lush growth and pendulous clusters of these vines attest to how well the grape adapts to growing in the Russian River Valley.
Winemaking Approach
In the cellar, Syrah is fermented in open-top tanks and gently punched down to extract maximum depth, structure, and varietal character. Care is taken to provide the extra oxygen exposure this variety demands.
Aging & Expression
The wine matures slowly over two years in large 132-gallon French oak puncheons.
Twice the volume of a standard barrel, the puncheons permit a longer, slower maturation. They also create a more delicate oak profile which showcases the varietal power of our wines. With this treatment, our Syrah retains the variety’s flavor potential, which unfurls and evolves over time.
Syrah Bottlings
Our Syrah bottlings annually pay homage to the two soil types that traverse our property.
estate Syrah
A classic expression of Syrah from the Dehlinger estate.
Goldridge Syrah & Altamont Syrah
Some years, we pay homage to two soil types that traverse our property with soil specific bottlings. The Goldridge Syrahs are exressive and lifted, and the Altamont Syrahs are structured and especially ageworthy.
East Face Syrah
A Reserve-level bottling from the vineyard’s east-facing slopes, where drier conditions yield especially concentrated fruit and a more powerful expression of the variety. Made in the best vintages.
